Each year, VASTA sponsors a conference for its membership. The conference conference often occurs in conjunction with the ATHE national conference, but often will be held separately. VASTA works to make certain that, at least, every five years the conference moves to an international location. The 2010 conference was held in Mexico City in conjunction with CEUVOZ. Conferences before that have been in NYC, Ashland OR, Denver, Chicago, Glasgow Scotland, and Philadelpia.
The 2011 conference, will be August 6-10, which immediately precedes the ATHE Conference in Chicago, IL. It's theme is entitled Vocal Play: Improv, Comedy, Song, & Character. Make plans to join us; an exciting conference has been planned.
In recent years, VASTA conferences have been three and a half to four days in length, and have featured a focus topic. Usually an internationally recognized specialist in some area of Voice and Speech is invited to present their work. Previous presenters have included Catherine Fitzmaurice, Jan Gist, Susana Bloch, Arthur Lessac, David Smukler, Kristen Linklater, Patsy Rodenburg, Cicely Berry, and Andrew Wade, among many others. In 2004, VASTA began to give members the opportunity to present at its conferences, and this very successful format has continued since then.
