New England Eric Armstrong, will be returning to Brandeis University next year (at least!). He worked with "Shakespeare in the Ruins" in Winnipeg, Manitoba this April on their production of Much Ado About Nothing. Eric has been busy developing the <vasta.org> site and the technical information for the new VASTA bibliography. Eric hopes to revamp his "v+s" (voice plus speech) page for the World Wide Web in May; check it out at: <www.brandeis.edu/speech/>. Kate DeVore is continuing as VASTA Conference Planner for the second year, this time with Kate Ufema and Sandy Shotwell. She has recently served as voice/dialect coach for Porcelain with the SpeakEasy Stage Company, and as dialect consultant for Molly Sweeney with the Nora Theatre Company. LastNovember Kate, in conjunction with her colleagues at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, presented a talk entitled "Research to Reality: Use of Empirical Evidence in Voice Therapy" at the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) annual convention. Ginny
Kopf, author of THE DIALECT HANDBOOK, was invited to teach a master
class and give tutorials at the Actor's Studio in New York in April. She
presented her method of developing natural-sounding dialects by "becoming"
a character from a specific region, exploring their culture, attitudes,
body language, and figuring out why they talk the way they talk. Ginny was
graciously hosted by fellow VASTA member Linda Carroll and William Riley,
who teach in the MFA program at the Actor's Studio. Ginny also did a book
signing and presentation at The Drama Book Shop, along with VASTA member
Gillian Lane-Plescia (see her notice).
Elisa Lloyd, Emory University, played the title role in Candida at Actor's Express in Atlanta in April (a photo from the production appeared in the April issue of American Theatre). She also coached text/ Nigerian accents for The Lion and the Jewel by Wole Soyinka at Theater Emory, and coached text/voice for Medea at the Alliance, directed by Kenny Leon and featuring Phylicia Rashad. This summer finds her back at the Georgia Shakespeare Festival for her fourth season, coaching Henry IV , part 1, The Miser, and Measure for Measure. Carol Pendergrast, East Carolina University, is pleased to report that vocal coaching of shows is now sufficiently appreciated and recognized at ECU for the administration to have granted her a reduced teaching load for next year (9 units instead of 12). This academic year she did the voice, speech, dialect and text coaching for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Landscape of the Body, and A View From the Bridge (thanks for your valuable lists of dialect sources, Ginny Kopf!). Carol is continuing research into the mysteries of "hoomi" (bi-tonal vocal production) (Continues on p. 17) |
