University, MS 072, Waltham MA, 02254-9110, USA. If you have yet to access the web, this might be a good reason to take the leap.

HOW TO ACCESS THE WEB:
First of all, if you are new to the internet, the easiest thing to do is to ASK FOR HELP. There are internet experts all around us these days - many of your clients and students could hook you up in minutes. We were all new to this once - if there is a problem, just ask. If, after trying to access the web yourself, you get stuck, confused or just need some advice, please do not hesitate to contact me via email, phone or snail mail (listed above).

There are a few basic requirements for accessing the web:

*a personal computer, usually an Apple Macintosh or a variation on a PC (good ones are now available for under $1000, used ones for less than $500)

*a connection to the net (via modem or ethernet connection at your work),

*and software to read the data that you get from the internet.

All this is useless without a means for your computer to connect to the net itself - an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your ISP may be the institution you work for, America Online (AOL) or some other giant, or a smaller, local ISP. You should be able to get access from your home for less than US $20 per month (depending on where you live).

The software necessary could be a number of products. First, a "browser" used to explore the internet. The most common products available today are Netscape Navigator or Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE). Secondly, an email program - though both Netscape and MSIE have the ability to read email. You use the browser to access our site at <http://www.vasta.org/>, and the email program to access VASTAVOX.

A note to those of you who can only access their email via a "text only" terminal or telnet access. You may be able to visit <vasta.org> by using the text based "Lynx"

browser, built into most UNIX based systems. Once logged into your server, type "lynx" at the prompt and hit return. You should be whisked to a World Wide Web page. Type "G" for "go" and then type in our URL <http://www.vasta.org/> and you will get the data only version of our site.
