New England Eric Armstrong, Brandeis U., attended Canada's National Voice Intensive Faculty Symposium in Vancouver in January and presented material on persuasion in Shake-speare's rhetoric. In Fall '97, he coached Arcadia (and acted in it too) at Brandeis U. where he is currently teaching speech. He also has been working on the VASTA website at <www.vasta.org> Gary Genard, Tufts University, was dialect coach on Jack the Ripper directed by VASTA member Suzanne Ramczyk at Bridgewater State College in October. Most exciting news: Gary recently returned from China with his newly adopted daughter, Lydia Rose. Congratulations! and Best Wishes! Nancy Houfek joined the American Repertory Theatre as Voice and Speech coach in September. Since then, she has coached the Bacchae (dir. by Francois Rochaix), Peter Pan & Wendy (dir. by Marcus Stern), The Taming of the Shrew (dir. by Andre Serban) and In the Jungle of the Cities (dir. by Robert Woodruff). She has also coached Institute productions of Betrayal, Best Intentions, The Proposal & The Festivities, and The Seagull. She has been assisted at A.R.T. in January by Grace Zandarski as a Voice and Speech Intern. Peter Jack Tkatch, U. of Vermont, coached voice and dialects in the University of Vermont/Vermont Stage Company production of The Importance of Being Earnest playing the Royal Tyler Theatre, Feb. 25 - March 8. Mid Atlantic Catherine Fitzmaurice led workshops in Destructuring/ Restructuring at Temple U. last summer. She will offer a five-day program at Cal State Fullerton from May 30-June 3 1998 (for further informtion call Joan Melton at 714-449-0643). |

Robert Thayer Sataloff, M.D., D.M.A., will be hosting the Voice Foundation's 27th Annual Symposium: "Care of the Professional Voice" from June 1st through June 7th, 1998, at the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelphia. He is doing this in association with Allegheny University Hospitals, Thomas Jefferson University, the Academy of Vocal Arts, and Temple University. The Symposium has been the international meeting designed to fulfill the need for interdisciplinary communication and education. There will be presenta- tions given by scientists, physicians, researchers, speech-language pathologists, singers, singing teachers, and the world's leading experts in the care of the professional voice. She gave a workshop entitled "A Woman's Voice: Bespeaking Wisdom and Experience" to twenty-five University of Virginia female faculty and graduate students. Owing to demand, the workshop will be offered every semester. Jan Gist, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, reports with great sadness the death of ASF's beloved movement teacher, choreographer, and director Carol Delk Thompson. Carol died of (Continues on p. 19) |

Catherine is also offering a Certification Intensive in New York City June
15-July 17, 1998. She teaches classes in NYC at the Actors Center and privately.
Recently, she coached at the New York Theatre Workshop, Hartford Stage,
and the McCarter Theatre. In 1997 she presented her work at conferences
in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Regensburg, Germany.
Barry Kur did the Text/Voice coaching for Three Sisters and performed the role of Narrator/Mysterious Man in Into the Woods this spring for Penn State's University Resident Theatre Company. Brennan Murphy completed the Voice Studies course at London's Central School of Speech and Drama with a mark of Distinction in Teaching. She was able to teach at Central, Italia Conti, Middlesex U., and Rose Bruford College, her favorite. The year was demanding yet rewarding. Currently, she is teaching Acting with Marian Hampton at Illinois State University and voice coaching several school productions Donna Snow will teach a workshop in the Fitzmaurice Certification Intensive in New York City for a week this summer.
