been developed, in hope of stripping the students of classic speech clichés as well as "performance anxiety." Michael Lugering was recently hired as a voice coach for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Next year he will take a sabbatical leave to complete his book, titled The Expressive Act: Integrated Voice and Movement Technique for the Actor. He continues to travel to New York to study with the Eric Hawkins Dance Company. This spring he will direct Hedda Gabler and coach As You Like It. Kathy Maes will be directing a production of Brilliant Traces, a two-hander long one-act play, as part of a research project proposed by Mark Kuntz from Western Washington at Bellingham. The play will be produced at two other institutions, Iowa State and Villanova, in addition to Western Washington and the U. of Colorado-Denver. The play will be performed on April 1 at the hosting universities using their cast of two. On the next morning, each female member of the four casts will get on a plane and travel to another of the four institutions and will perform the play with a different actor and on a stage she has never seen. The purpose of the project involves a focus on the discovery process of performance ( i.e., the ability of the performers to listen and respond on the moment) in an unfamiliar setting. Kathy will update the report in the spring. Kathy is currently scheduled to teach theatre and linguistics in Russia at Moscow State University in May. She is also scheduled to teach voice at the Moscow Art Theatre. Dawn McCaugherty, U. of Utah, directed Two Noble Kinsmen for Shakespeare in the Rough in Toronto, Canada this past summer. Additionally, she led a workshop for the Teachers Institute for York University, attended theatre and viewed art galleries in London, Paris and at the |
Stratford Festival. In the fall, she coached Midsummer Night's Dream
(U of Utah) and dialect coached The Miracle Worker (Pioneer Theatre
Company). She is serving as a Circuit Coordinator for the KC/ACTF Region
VIII. In the spring, Dawn will be directing A Little Night Music,
with Marina Tichotsky as musical director. Having just been INS approved
for a green card, Dawn is looking forward to pursuing summer work with Shakespeare
festivals in the US.
Sandra Shotwell, U. of Utah, along with teaching and being interim chair of the Actor Training Program, continues work in television and voice-overs. She most recently appeared as Principal Adams in a "Touched By An Angel" episode titled, "How Do You Spell Trust?" Gail Springer, before leaving for London and New York on sabbatical from the College of Santa Fe this spring, sang lead soprano with a jazz group called "Caravan," directed by Jack Manno. Earlier she played the part of Anna I in scenes from Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins, directed by Phil Chapman, and sang a recital of original works by Kelvin McNeal to poems by Samuel Beckett and Margaret Atwood. She also coached voice, movement and dialects for Lend Me A Tenor, directed by Nick Mangano. All productions were at the Greer Garson Theatre in Santa Fe. Sharon Winegar-Painter performed in Dracula and served as dialect coach on A Chrismas Carol, both Sacramento Theatre Company productions. Dianne Winslow recently dialect coached for the Arizona Theatre Company's production of Valley Song. She also dialect coached for the Arizona Repertory Theatre's production of Kentucky Cycle. ART is the performance wing of the U. of Arizona's Professional Actor Training Program. Dianne continues her research into teaching techniques for |
