Television. She played Katherine Marshall, George Marshall's wife, in a program called "War of China's Fate," about the conflict between Chiang Kaishek and Mao Tse Tung and the establishment of the People's Republic of China. In February she will complete filming this project.

Kate Wilson was the dialect coach for Beth Henley's Impossible Marriage at the Roundabout Theater. This fall she coached Wilde's A Woman of No Importance at Washington's Shakespeare Theater. She also taught at Fordham University and at the Stella Adler Conservatory. This winter she heads back to Wash., D.C. to coach King John, directed by Michael Kahn and The Trojan Women, directed by JoAnne Akalaitis.

Southeast

Kate Burke, University of Virginia, coached King Lear at UV and attended the "Actor Training: Inter- national Perspectives" conference in Knoxville in January.

Jan Gist, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, reports that last summer she attended a weeklong yoga retreat at Shoshoni, in the mountains above Boulder, CO. She highly recommends the experience to other VASTA members. In the fall, Jan had a full schedule of coaching students in the ASF MFA program in many projects including The Illusion, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Nights Scream (geared toward preparing HS students for Shakespeare), Fair and Tender Ladies, and Toad of Toad Hall. The ASF Repertory season began last January, and Jan's many and varied coaching duties include As You Like It, Richard III, Troilus and Cressida, and Lurleen (a new play about Lurleen Wallace, former governor of Alabama and wife of

Elisa Lloyd continues to teach and coach in the Theatre Studies department in Atlanta. Last Jan. and Feb. she played Elizabeth Sandry/ Narrator Number Two in The Grapes of Wrath, directed by David Bell, at the Alliance Theatre. (She served as voice/dialect coach for that show as well.) In March she co-directed a staged reading of Love's Labor's Lost at Theatre Emory, and in April she played Mrs. Solness in a workshop of The Master Builder at Theatre Emory, directed by Vinnie Murphy, in a new translation in preparation for a full production in the fall.

Jonathan Michaelson directed "Sweeney Todd" in the fall at the University of Alabama, and played Macbeth there in the spring.

Christine Morris will perform her play "Blue Roses," a solo on the life of Rose Williams, for three weeks in June at Profile Theatre Project in Portland, Oregon. It is a production of Chapel Hill's Archipelago Theatre, directed by Ellen Hemphill, with music by Sam Piperato.

Ellen O'Brien's, Guilford College, essay, "Civil Wars in the Rehearsal Room: Conflicting Theories in Collaborative Practice", was recently published in "Shakespeare In The Twentieth Century: The Selected Proceedings on the International Shakespeare Association World Congress" by the University of Delaware Press. In January, Ellen returned to People's Light and Theatre Company to coach a production of As You Like It. She has also been invited to lead a workshop on her physical approach to teaching iambic pentameter for the national meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America in April.

  Carolina University in the fall. She also attended the Pacific Voice Foundation Conference in San Francisco in November, conferring with Dr. Per-Ake Lindestad of Sweden on his high-speed laryngeal photography of bi-tonal chanting, and also with speech scientists from Harvard and MIT regarding the development of technology to assist communication by entubated patients. In January, she attended the international conference on actor training in Knoxville.

Bonnie Raphael, University of North Carolina, (along with several other VASTA members) has been asked to join the faculty for VOICE SEMINAR 1999, an interdisciplinary seminar on Cross-Over Techniques (Interdisciplinary Interactivity) to be held on the Utah State University Campus in Logan, Utah. Two duplicate one-week courses will be offered, the first from July 23-28 and the second from July 30-August 4.
