Kinnersley Castle,
Herefordshire, UK

In addition to individual and group time to help people focus on their needs in these areas, we will also look at the process of working with groups, creating and setting up improvisations, structuring and pacing workshops, dealing with difficult situations/individuals, and contexts in which this approach can be applied.
As well as bodywork being an integral part of the workshop, there will be daily warm-up sessions taken by Darien, focusing on aspects of body release and energy that relate directly to vocal expression.

Singing from the Soles of the Feet/ Frankie Armstrong
May 8-10
UK
For thousands of years, our ancestors sang to accompany work, devotion, seasonal rituals and social gatherings - to express joy, grief, rage, tenderness, hope and fear. All these emotions can be given full range through the power and beauty of the voice. To help unlock this, Frankie uses a range of gentle movements and exercises to help relax and free the body and voice. She focuses on how to involve the whole body - to give rise to the voice from the feet on up. She uses chants and songs from around the world, along with simple structures to create vocal ‘events’.

Derek Barnes is an exceptional individual with an [arguably] unique range of skills that have been developed over 20 years of research and teaching. he is a musical director, composer voice teacher and healer. He is also a master practitioner trained in the Hustler singing technique . His numerous professional credits include the National Theatre and he is a former professor at Gottenburg university, where he coached the musical theatre and opera students. He is known as "the teacher of the safe belt" but his exploratory vocal workshops offer a different and, I believe, unmissable opportunity for any practitioner or teacher committed to an integrated, cross cultural and holistic approach to voice work.

Voices of the Archetypes of Myth/ Frankie Armstrong
November 27-29
in Broadway, rural Worcestershire, UK
This workshop provides an exciting way to expand and liberate vocal colour, range and expressivity. It uses movement, imagination and storytelling to access a wide range of vocal qualities and expression through exploring figures that inhabit the world’s mythology, such as The Huntress, The Trickster, The Child, The Mother and The Crone. These archetypes are not a character or caricature but a particular aspect or quality in all of us.

The complex relationship between our body, our breath, our emotions and our voice has been charted over many years. Recently this relationship has been addressed by a number of eminent neurologists and neuro-biologists such as Antonio Damasio, Candace Pert and Susanna Bloch, in addition to researchers into performance and creativity and those in the healing arts. If you would like to gain some idea of what Fitzmaurice Voicework is, and what it might do for you, I would first ask you to imagine a guitar, or a violin, or any similar stringed instrument with a sound box. You might then imagine placing one of your hands as firmly as you can on the back of the sound box, and think of plucking one of the strings with the other hand. You will hear the pitch of the note as it would be sounded under any other circumstances, but it is probably a thin sound; a sound without richness and fullness; a sound without real volume; a sound that is flat and lacking expressivity. With your hand pressed on the sound box, the instrument is incapable of expressing the harmonics that give its sound richness, presence and an individualistic character.
