VASTA Conference 2012

A milestone conference: our 25th anniversary!

The ATHE Conference will immediately precede ours, giving our members the opportunity to take part in both conferences.

Molly Smith, Artistic Director of the Arena Stage,is going to be the kick off speaker at our conference at the opening reception.  Next we have Brent Blair, Linklater-designated voice instructor and founding director of the Center for Theatre of the Oppressed and Applied Theatre Arts in Los Angeles, returning to begin this conference in the dynamic way he closed last year’s.  Michael Rohd founding artistic director of Sojourn Theatre in Portland, Oregon, a 2005 recipient of Americans for the Arts Animating Democracy Exemplar Award, and an associate artist with Cornerstone Theater Company will close this conference and help us gather our voices to lead our organization into a new future.

Ivan Middelrigh and Marie Paule Marthe from the Abraxas Voice Institute and the Roy Hart International Arts Center at the Château de Malérargues in France will take us on a fantastic journey into their work.  And we will watch a beautiful documentary with Elizabeth Ingram about a program inspired by Becci Ingram and developed by Elizabeth at Syracuse University: the ' All Star CAST ' program for people with special needs.. And so much more!!! In addition we will have the opportunity to celebrate and learn from each other as we experience over 50 member presentations, workshops, performances, and papers!  The days will be quite long and QUITE exciting!

Please look here, on Twitter, Facebook, and the conference blog for daily up-dates as more is announced about the exciting events at the conference.

Sunday, August 5 (check-in begins at 10 am at West Hall registration desk, conference activities begin at 5 pm) through Thursday, August 9 (the all conference lunch will end at 2 pm), 2012.

The entire conference will be held on George Washington University's satellite campus (known as the Mount Vernon Campus), in the Foxhall neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., at 2100 Foxhall Road, Washington DC, 20007.  This lovely, green retreat-like setting will provide us opportunities to deeply engage in our work, our play, and in building our community.

If  you wish to explore other parts of the nation's capital we will have 24-hour transportation to and from the Foggy Bottom Campus on the Vern Express.

If you drive, there is an onsite parking garage for your convenience.

If you fly into one of the local airports (Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the most convenient -- although Dulles (IAD) also serves the Washington DC metro area) you should arrange a Super Shuttle  to take you from the airport directly to the George Washington University's Mount Vernon Campus at 2100 Foxhall Road. (Click here for info about the Super Shuttle from IAD) (Click here for info about the Super Shuttle from DCA)

Some of the most exciting parts of VASTA's annual conference are the presentations given by fellow members. Again this year, those presentations will be sprinkled throughout the entire conference. This year is quite amazing!  Please click here for a draft of the conference schedule.  Please note that some times and places may shift slightly. At this point we are certain that the days will be abundant!  Again look here, on Twitter, Facebook, and the conference blog for announcements!

We are no longer able to accept registrations which include the dorm housing option.  All new registrants will need to arrange their own lodging in one of the nearby hotels:

Breakfast: The cost of breakfasts will be included for those that are staying in the dorms. Those staying off campus will need to arrange their own morning meal.

Lunch: The cost of all lunches is included in the conference fee.    We are working with dining services at GWU to do box lunches for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday because the lunch-time presentations are "brown bag". The Closing Lunch/Celebration is on Thursday from noon until 2 pm and will be a catered buffet.

Dinner: The Sunday evening reception will include a light supper which will be enough for most appetites . . . for those that need more there is a Safeway store 1/2 block away. There are several  restaurants near-by for dining off-campus on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings -- or you may prefer to prepare a meal in the dorm. Or you may wish to order delivery from one of many nearby eateries.

There is a parking garage on campus (within 20 yards of the dorm).  If you bring a car you will spend $9. per day for parking in that lot.  There is also on-street parking quite near by.

VASTA Member Registration Fee: $300.00.

VASTA Student-member Registration Fee: $200.00, must be enrolled in an academic institution.

Non-Member Registration:  In the past, the non-member registration cost was the same as the cost for joining VASTA + a member's conference registration fee.  This year we are discontinuing that practice and asking all non-members to simply join VASTA and then Register for the conference.

After you enter your credit card information you will be directed to a conference questionnaire that will help us streamline the conference offerings that are planed for this anniversary.

1. Please have your list of roommates ready if you wish to select those who will share a suite.  Everyone needs to list the same roommates in a share when they register.  If you have no preference, please state that. If you prefer male or female roommates, please state that.  A VASTA volunteer is compiling all this information and it will make it so much easier.

2. There are many dinners, breakfasts, lunches, and other events listed that we are asking you to check off if you think you will attend.  All of them are open to ALL ATTENDEES except the one breakfast designed to honor those who have served on the board or as officers.  If you have, please have your dates of service and title ready. We are compiling all this information for the conference.
