Bio
Born in Oxford, UK, Julia has been singing her whole life and teaching groups to sing since she was 18! Always compelled to understand more about the emotional story behind a singer’s experience, she discovered Voice Movement Therapy in 1998 and studied with the founder Paul Newham, before qualifying as a registered practitioner and moving to San Francisco in 2000. Since that move, she has composed music for theater & circus, music directed, produced an award winning album ‘Lullaby Island’, performed jazz and musical theater, and trained as a voice actor. She has extensively studied mix level singing with Dave Stroud, Katie Guthorn and healthy belt technique with Mindy Pack (founder of The Voice Straw). She was a teaching artist for the San Francisco Opera Guild and Summer Conservatory, has presented at conferences all around the world teaching therapists, dancers and expressive artists how to use their voices to free their emotions and creativity, and was the former director of the International Association for Voice Movement Therapy. More recently she has been teaching voice actors how to take care of their voices for extended and extreme use in video games and long form narration. She has a course called Vocal Health for Professional Voice Users and Essential Warm Ups and Cool Downs for Voice Actors. She is a regular teacher at VoiceOne voiceover school in San Francisco and has presented at numerous voiceover conferences including VO Atlanta.
She won a Voice Arts award for her voice over role in Disney’s Star Wars game Jedi Challenges and has two popular podcasts, Your Free Voice & Dark and Twisty Tales which are available wherever you get your podcasts.
She is also a certified Jungian voice coach & singer who empowers other voice professionals to embrace vocal confidence, get unstuck and move into the full magnificence of their creative potential.
